Sharon Historical Commission

And

Sharon Historic District Commission

Meeting Minutes for

Wednesday, March 9, 2005

In attendance:  Gordon H. Hughes, Chairman, Robert S. Young, Vice-Chairman

Members -                   Deborah G. Pitman, Shirley A. Schofield,

Alternates -

Meeting was called to order at 7:30 pm.

  1. Resident, Steve LeSperance of Lyndon Road was in attendance.
  2. Park area at the end of Cedar Street was discussed.  The Board of Selectmen have asked us to review a request to name this area in memory of a former town resident.  They are proposing an Article for the Town Warrant, but it is a current by-law that the Historical Commission makes recommendations to Town Meeting for the naming of public buildings, land, and areas.  We unanimously voted to advise the Selectmen that there was insufficient time for us to do any research prior to Town Meeting and it should be deferred.
  3. The Community Preservation Act, having been voted upon favorably, will require the assemblage of a Community Preservation Commission.  George Bailey has been charged by the Selectmen to begin the process of putting the mechanisms together.  At the April meeting the Historical Commission should select their delegate to serve for a two year initial appointment.
  4. G. Hughes discussed creating an Application for Appropriateness regarding making changes to historic structures.  This is probably something we should discuss further with W.R. Schroeder who is working on these issues.
  5. R. Young and D. Martin were finally able to get in to see the premises at 143 Pond Street (former Schanbacher residence).  Anthony DiScipio, one of the developers, walked us around the property.  While both members found the conditions to be in dire disrepair, likely beyond salvation, it was discovered in our paperwork from the Building Inspector that a proper building demolition request has still not been filed.  Therefore no vote on the matter was taken.
  6. This Commission has an Article on the Town Warrant and it was determined that Debbie Pitman would speak on the issue before Town Meeting, that being a recommendation to Town Meeting to accept a name designation for the Community Center building for Frank I. Sullivan, as that was what the Sullivan Family (and many townsfolk) had believed was the intent all along.
  7. Dr. Fred Martin would like to speak to this Commission likely in April re: King Philip Estates.  The Planning Board has an upcoming meeting with the developer to negotiate construction plans.
  8. S. Schofield mentioned that Elsa Fitzgerald of Preservation Mass would like to hold a regional workshop in Sharon and that she and R. Young were in touch with Ms. Fitzgerald about dates and places.

No further business on the agenda, D. Pitman made a motion to adjourn.  This was seconded by S. Schofield and so moved.
